Beta Fish

After goldfish, the Betta fish is probably the second most popular fish kept. The Betta Splendens is a favorite because of its beauty, its long fins and because they are relatively easy to care for. The males sport deep beautiful colors whereas the females are less colorful.

It is called the Siamese Fighting Fish because of its behavior towards other males of the same species. You cannot keep two or more males in the same tank. If more than one male betta fish are placed in the same tank, they will fight until only one of them remains. They will flare out their gill covers and erect their fins showing the other fish their fighting posture.

There are ways to see this behaviour without introducing another male. One way is to use a small hand mirror and place it up against the tank glass so that the male betta may see his reflection. He will mistake his reflection as another male and the betta fighting posture should then be displayed.

You can get small betta tanks that come with dividers which will allow you to keep two bettas in the same tank. Many keep them in small bowls and they may live for a while in these small bowls. However, to get the most beautiful colors and optimal health for your fish, they will do better in a 10 gallon or larger tank with a heater that can maintain a constant temperature in the aquarium. If you plan on keeping yours in a small tank, please read the small tank page for ideas on equipment needed. More Pictures of beta fish.

Giant Arapaima

Also known as the pirarucu, it is the largest freshwater fish in the world reaching the length of 18 ft. It can be found in the Amazon river together with the silver and black arowana. A 4-6 inches juvenile arapaima would cost around PHP 4000-5000 here in the Philippines. Through my friend's experience, it has a big appetite and grows very fast, even a 100 gallon aquarium is not enough for this fish as it often ends up breaking the glass. So quite often you would see arapaima owners building ponds or pools in order to accomodate their pet.

Malaysia Gold Arowana

Probably one of the most beautiful and affordable arowana being sold here in the Philippines. This kind of arowana is one of my personal favorites. A 6-7 inches golden arowana is being sold here at the price of PHP 2500-3000. Although they say the malaysian gold arowana is a green arowana or is a crossbreed of lower quality arowanas.

The Cichlids

New and Old world species pictures are here, the cichlids remain one on the most popular kept species in the hobby today. New pictures are added as I receive them.

The Catfish

Such a generic term for such a large group of fish. Most of the species are friendly and excellent community members and deserve to be kept in their own right, not just as scavengers.

Guppy / Poecilia Reticulata

Guppy / Poecilia Reticulata

The guppy is named after the Rev. J.L. Guppy of Trinidad, an early collector of the species from the late 1800's. Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are placed in the same family as mollies and mosquitofish. The wild, original guppy is native to Central America, as well as Trinidad and northern South America. Today, many guppies are found in Asia, especially Singapore, where many fancy strains are bred in large fish farms, and shipped to pet stores all over the world.
